APB Reloaded closed beta to start in February
The official Twitter account for APB Reloaded, the free-to-play relaunch of the troubled MMO shooter by GamersFirst, says that the closed beta of the new version will begin as soon as next month. Information will reportedly be sent out to interested parties (presumably including former APB players, though you can sign up on the official site as well) this week. Then, in February, closed beta servers will come back online as the game gets its second chance to succeed.
GamersFirst told Joystiq recently that its first priority is to «get the game up and live again» and then drop an unreleased patch, open up some of the zones originally locked to free players and, finally, institute microtransaction plans and offerings like premium accounts. The company also plans to target new markets with the game, specifically Brazil and South America. Here’s hoping the second go-round turns out better than the first one did. Child’s Play raised over $2 million in 2010
The Child’s Play charity announced today that it brought in a grand (grand) total of $2,294,317.53 in donations for 2010, a new annual record for the organization. Reflecting on the figure at the bottom of a Penny Arcade news post primarily about a repellent fruit sludge you squeeze into your mouth, Jerry «Tycho Brahe» Holkins said that the lifetime total for Child’s Play donations is now over nine million dollars, noting to contributors, «If it is possible to Win Charity, you have done so.» He also pointed out that not all of last year’s donations are likely to have been accounted for yet.
Gamasutra reports that some of the larger donations came from charity drives like the Humble Indie Bundle, which contributed $300,000 during its second-year initiative in late December, and the «Desert Bus for Hope» marathon, which raised $207,000, in addition to the Gears of War 3 «Fate of Carmine» fundraiser, which accounted for $150,000 in donations and might have killed a virtual guy. Indie dev Renegade Kid targeting 3DS in 2011
With moody first-person games like Moon and Dementium, Renegade Kid has relied on its custom-made graphics engine to convey unusually solitary and atmospheric experiences on Nintendo’s handheld. The studio is taking a step forward in 2011 and is currently in talks with an unspecified publisher to convert an existing game to the 3DS (for which it’s already authorized as a developer).
«Right now, we’re in heavy get-new-projects mode,» Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham wrote on his blog this past weekend. «There is one 3DS title that we’re in talks about with a publisher. It is a really cool game. It would be a conversion of an existing title, which we would bring to the 3DS. Let’s call it code-named ‘Planet.'» Watsham said that the game is close to being signed with a publisher — «in theory» — but kept his optimism restrained for the time being. «But, anything can happen in the world of business, so all we can do is hope everything stays its course and we sign it soon.»
Watsham recently gauged interest in a DSiWare version of Maximillian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds, a colorful DS platformer announced in June 2009 that’s been in search of a publisher ever since. Renegade Team was looking for at least 1,000 comments on the polling post, but has elicited fewer than 500 thus far. «This is sad, but also exactly why we asked for votes; to help us gauge whether development of the game would be financially wise or not,» Watsham wrote. «Honestly, if we can’t scrounge up at least 1,000 votes in one month, it’s a fair sign that there aren’t enough people out there interested in the game, DSiWare, or both.»
Renegade Kid’s first game (of at least three) for 2011 is ATV Wild Ride, a non-terrifying racing game. A serious unboxing of Thrustmaster’s official GT5 racing wheel
Inside Sim Racing does not mess around. When the site got its hands on what it says is one of the first Thrustmaster T500RS units in the US (a.k.a. the official Gran Turismo 5 racing wheel), it made this epic unboxing video. Carrying a $600 price tag [Ed.’s note: Not a typo!], the peripheral is expected to ship in North America and Europe on January 5 … which, coincidentally, is when this blogger’s car payment, less than half the price of the T500RS, is due.
